Äkäslompolo village is situated in the north of the polar circle in Finnish Lapland. Äkäslompolo, together with neighbouring village Ylläsjärvi forms the ski area Ylläs which is situated on an altitude of 718 meters. The two villages are 15 kilometers apart. Besides skiing, there is a lot more snow sports to enjoy. Think of a fast ride on a dogsled, ice fishing or visiting reindeer farms and reindeer villages.

The ski slopes for the alpine skiers of Yllas are the longest and most diverse across all resorts in Finland. With the lions share in blue and red slopes, the area is the most suitable for families with children. The black slopes nevertheless provide enough teeth grinding and nail biting for the expert skiers or snowboarders. With more than 300km cross-country tracks, this ski resort has a tremendous attraction for tourism to the area.

The village Äkäslompolo uses the Ylläs ski school, which is about 3 kilometers from the village. There is a free bus every hour that you drive back and forth. The ski school is from December to mid-April and the group classes always begin on Monday. You can choose 3 or 5 days of ski lessons. Beginners start in the morning and advanced classes are in the afternoon. The minimum age for group lessons is 5 years. Children younger than 5 years can take private lessons or practice for free under guidance of their parents on the baby ski slope.
